Science keeps building evidence that regular physical training improves insulin sensitivity, reduces the risk of cardiovascular complications, and can support remission of type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.
The report highlights the case of German tennis player Alexander Zverev, who lives with type 1 diabetes: during the 2026 Roland Garros final he administered insulin between sets and went on to win his first Grand Slam title, an example that physical exercise isn't diabetes's enemy but, in many cases, one of its best treatment tools.
Fear of hypoglycemia is the main reason many people with diabetes avoid exercising. However, organizations like the German Diabetes Association maintain that people with type 1 diabetes can practice any sport, even competitively, as long as they carry an emergency kit with a glucose meter and sugary drinks.
